Online and Hybrid Options

Online-only CNA programs are not permitted in California. All 100 clinical hours must be completed in person at a licensed healthcare facility (CDPH Online CNA Training Providers).

Hybrid programs are allowed. The theory portion of your training can be completed online through CDPH-approved hybrid providers, while you attend in-person clinical rotations separately. CDPH maintains a list of approved online training providers for the theory component.

Pass the California CNA Competency Exam

After completing your CDPH-approved training, you're eligible to schedule the California CNA Competency Examination with Credentia. The exam has two parts — both must be passed to receive certification (Credentia — California Handbook).

Written Knowledge Test

The written exam is 60-70 multiple-choice questions with a 2-hour time limit. Topics include patient care, safety procedures, infection control, patient rights, communication skills, and basic nursing tasks. An oral version is available for candidates with reading difficulties.

Skills Evaluation

The skills test is where exam anxiety concentrates — and where specifics help the most. You perform 5 randomly selected skills in front of a Credentia evaluator in approximately 30 minutes. Every skills test includes handwashing and at least one measurement skill (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations, weight, or height). The other three skills are drawn randomly from the full NNAAP skills list.

Each skill must be performed completely and in the correct sequence. Breaking infection control procedures or skipping a step are the most common failure reasons. Exam Fees and Retake Policy

The combined exam fee is $115-$200 for both portions. Individual retake fees vary by component (Credentia — California Handbook).

You have 3 attempts to pass both portions within 2 years of completing your training. If you pass one part but not the other, you only retake the portion you failed — the passed portion carries over. If you don't pass after 3 attempts, or if your 2-year window expires, you must complete the full 160-hour CDPH-approved training program again (Credentia — Eligibility Criteria).

That consequence is worth knowing now — preparation is far cheaper than retraining.

Get Listed on the California Nurse Aide Registry

After you pass both parts of the competency exam, your results are reported to CDPH by Credentia (Credentia — Registry Information). You then submit your application to get officially listed on the California Nurse Aide Registry.

Application Process and Forms
