Free CNA Skills Practice Test
Pick a skill, put its steps in order from memory, and see right away which steps you missed and which ones would fail you.
Hand hygiene is on every NNAAP skills exam, so it's the best place to start.
How the CNA skills practice works
Pick a skill
Choose any of the 20 skills, grouped by type. Each one follows the steps an evaluator checks on test day.
Put the steps in order
Arrange the steps from memory and get corrected instantly. Miss a critical step and the skill fails, same as on test day.
Take a mock exam
When you're ready, run a timed 30-minute exam with several skills and no hints, scored the way your state's provider scores it.
The interactive practice loads here. If it does not appear, enable JavaScript, or study every skill step by step in our CNA skills test guide.
Three things to know before test day
One missed critical step fails the skill
Each skill has critical element steps. Leave one out or do it wrong and you don't pass that skill, no matter how well the other steps went.
Your state's provider sets the scoring
Credentia, Prometric, Headmaster/D&S, and Pearson VUE each publish their own skills and steps. Pick your state to see which provider you'll test with.
Expect one measurement skill
The NNAAP exam always includes one. Along with the steps, the number you record has to land within the allowed range of the evaluator's reading.
Frequently Asked Questions About the CNA Skills Practice Test
Is this CNA skills practice test free?
Yes. Every skill and the mock exam are free, with no account or signup. Open the page and start practicing.
How many skills are on the CNA skills test?
On the NNAAP exam, you perform five skills in 30 minutes. Hand hygiene is always one of them, and one of the other four is a measurement skill. Other providers set their own number, so check your state's candidate handbook.
What's the difference between practice mode and the mock exam?
Practice mode lets you work through one skill at a time and corrects you as you go. The mock exam gives you several skills, a 30-minute timer, and no hints, then scores you at the end.
Does this match my state's CNA skills exam?
The mock exam asks for your state and uses its testing provider's rules, and the steps follow the NNAAP-style skill lists. Wording and step counts can differ between providers, so check each skill against your candidate handbook before test day.
How many steps can you miss on the CNA skills test?
You can't miss any critical element step: leaving one out fails that skill. For the other steps, the NNAAP handbook says you must do enough of them correctly to meet the passing standard, but it doesn't publish a number. If you catch a mistake during the test, tell the evaluator and you'll be told how to correct it.
What happens if I fail a skill on test day?
On the NNAAP exam you have to pass all five skills, so failing one means retaking the skills evaluation. How many attempts you get and what a retake costs depend on your state. Our guide to retaking the CNA exam covers the rules.
Can I practice CNA skills on my phone?
Yes. The practice test runs in your phone's browser, so you can work through a skill between classes or on a break. There's nothing to install.
