CNA Training Structure

Classroom Learning

The Nurse Aide program at SKCTC focuses on teaching students the nursing assistant skills needed for safe patient care. You’ll learn how to function under the supervision of a licensed nurse while assisting in meeting patients’ hygiene, comfort, safety, and emotional needs. The course covers essential skills that prepare you to work in a variety of healthcare settings.

Clinical Experience

Clinical training is conducted at Long-Term Care Facilities and may be scheduled during day, evening, or weekend hours. This hands-on experience allows you to practice the skills you’ve learned in the classroom in real-world healthcare environments, preparing you for your future role as a nursing assistant.

Exam Preparation

The program prepares students to take the Medicaid Nurse Aide State Competency Exam. Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll be eligible to schedule your exam, which consists of both written and skills portions. The exam costs $115 for both portions ($40 for written only, $75 for skills only). According to State of Kentucky guidelines, you have one year from completing your training to successfully pass the competency evaluation exam.

Admission Requirements

There are no special admission requirements or prerequisites for the Medicaid Nurse Aide (NAA 100 or MNA 100) program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Health Certifications Required

  • TB skin test within the past year (if positive, a chest x-ray is required)
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or signed declination

Students will not be allowed to attend clinical rotations without proof of these health certifications.

Tuition & Financial Aid Information

Tuition Costs (2024-2025)

  • Kentucky Residents: $189 per credit hour
  • Non-Resident Students: $260 per credit hour
  • Mandatory Fee: $8 per credit hour (all students)
  • Distance Learner Fee: $20 per credit hour (for online courses)
  • Total Program Cost: Approximately $567-$1,134 for Kentucky residents (3-6 credit hours); $780-$1,560 for non-residents (3-6 credit hours)

Additional Expenses

  • Medicaid Nurse Aide State Competency Exam: $115 (both skills and written portions)
  • Repeat performance (skills): $60
  • Repeat written exam: $15

Financial Assistance

The program is eligible for the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship, which offers tuition-free education (up to 60 credit hours) for Kentucky residents with a high school diploma or working on their GED who don’t already have an associate’s degree or higher.

Students from reciprocity counties (Claiborne and Campbell Counties in Tennessee) qualify for in-state tuition rates. Lee County, Virginia students pay $256 per credit hour.
