CNA Training Structure

Classroom Learning

The program provides 90 hours of didactic (classroom) training covering essential knowledge for certified nursing assistants. Students learn about age-specific care through the lifespan, safe patient care delivery, infection prevention principles and practices, body mechanics and mobility skills, communication skills, assisting with daily needs, nutrition and assisting patients with meeting their nutritional needs, common health problems and working with a healthcare team, and CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS).

Clinical Experience

Students complete 70 hours of hands-on clinical work at Piper Shores campus, gaining real-world experience by working with actual residents. The clinical experience allows students to practice taking vital signs, assisting with patient mobility, and patient hygiene skills. Students have the opportunity to work with residents at Piper Shores, including at their Holbrook assisted living and memory care residence.

Exam Preparation

The program includes 20 hours of skills development to prepare students for the state licensing exam. Upon completion of the course, students take the state certification examination, which they must pass to be listed on the Maine CNA registry.

CNA Class Schedule & Flexibility

The program is offered throughout the year with multiple start dates:

  • The 11-week course runs afternoons and evenings on Tuesday and Wednesday, and full days on Saturdays
  • The newer 7-week program runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00 PM to 9:30 PM

  • Financial Support Options: Piper Shores offers a paid CNA training program where students are paid $20 per hour during coursework (paid as a lump sum 30 days after hire)

    • $5,000 signing bonus for evening shifts (potentially day shifts if available)
    • Total value of benefits can exceed $8,000
    • Guaranteed employment upon successful completion with competitive hourly wage of $20

For those accepted into the program, there is also an option to participate in the CNA Apprenticeship Program, which provides paid training in exchange for an 18-month work commitment following graduation.
