CNA Training Structure

  • Classroom Learning The Nurse Aide Certificate program at Columbus State includes classroom instruction covering essential knowledge needed to provide basic care for clients in long-term care settings. Students must have their textbook and workbook for the first day of class. The program requires 60 hours of classroom/lab instruction.
  • Clinical Experience Students complete 16 hours of clinical preparation as part of the program requirements. During clinical experiences, students must wear navy blue scrubs and closed-toe shoes (white, gray, black, or navy blue). Crocs are not permitted for clinicals.
  • Exam Preparation The program prepares students to be eligible to take the state test. Upon successful completion of the course, students can sit for the CNA exam. Please note: Per OAC 3701-18-26, students must have a social security number to be eligible for the state test.

Admission Requirements

  • Must be an enrolled Columbus State student
  • Must meet placement requirements:
    • Placement into ENGL 1100 or completion of ENGL 0190 or ESL 0190 with a grade of “C” or better
    • Placement into “NO READING REQUIRED”
  • Must complete the NURC 1001 health record and upload to Immuware by the given deadline
  • Must complete background check and drug testing with results received at Columbus State before registration
  • Must review Standards Essential for Nursing Students
