CNA Training Structure

Classroom Learning

The classroom portion consists of 72 hours of instruction and supervised laboratory time over a 6-week period. Students learn essential nursing assistant skills including introduction to healthcare facilities, role of the nursing assistant, communication, medical terminology, basic body structure and function, patient needs, basic growth and development, preventing infection, body mechanics, and much more. This comprehensive curriculum provides the foundation needed for providing quality patient care.

Clinical Experience

After successful completion of the classroom and lab portion, students progress to 48 hours of clinical training over a 6-week period. During this hands-on experience, students apply their knowledge and skills in real healthcare settings. The clinical component gives students the opportunity to interact with patients and healthcare professionals while performing essential nursing assistant duties under supervision.

Exam Preparation

The program prepares students for the Oregon State Board of Nursing certification exam. Upon successful completion of both the classroom and clinical components of the program, students are eligible to apply for this examination at an additional fee. Passing the state board exam allows graduates to work as certified nursing assistants in the state of Oregon.

Admission Requirements

Lane Community College’s Nursing Assistant program has open registration, so anyone can register for the program. However, there are certain requirements students need to fulfill:

  • Students must be proficient in English, including reading, writing, and speaking
  • Students must create an account with American Databank ($129) for background check, drug/alcohol screen, and vaccination tracking
  • Required immunizations must be uploaded to American Databank prior to clinical rotations:
    • Hepatitis B vaccination
    • MMR vaccination
    • Varicella vaccination
    • Adult TDAP
    • COVID-19 vaccine (Recommended)
    • PPD testing
    • OSHA bloodborne Pathogen training

CNA Class Schedule & Flexibility

The Nursing Assistant program at Lane Community College follows a 12-week schedule with two distinct components:
