CNA Training Structure

Classroom Learning

The theory portion consists of 60 hours of classroom instruction covering essential nursing assistant knowledge and skills. Students participate in lectures, discussions, videos, and class projects. The curriculum covers a comprehensive range of core topics including:

  • The healthcare system and the role of nursing assistants
  • Professionalism and job-seeking skills
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Communication skills
  • Infection control and HIV/AIDS training
  • Safety protocols for patients, environment, and caregivers
  • First Aid/CPR/Emergency care
  • Basic patient and resident care
  • Death and dying
  • Structure and function of the human body
  • Caring for people with special needs (rehabilitation, developmental disabilities, mental illness, dementia, cancer, HIV/AIDS)
  • Home health care

Clinical Experience

The clinical component of the program is divided into two parts:

  • Clinical Lab (20 hours): Students practice skills in a simulated patient care environment, gaining confidence in performing nursing assistant duties before working with actual patients.
  • Clinical (40 hours): Students work directly with patients or residents on the floor under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Unlike many other programs that offer clinical experience in only one skilled nursing facility, New Chapters provides experience in multiple settings, giving students a more inclusive training experience.

Additionally, students have the opportunity to experience “life happenings” as the teaching facilities call upon students throughout the course to be involved with procedures during class, providing real-life care experience from early in the program.

Exam Preparation

Upon successful completion of the clinical experience, students receive a New Chapters diploma and are eligible for the Washington State Nursing Assistant Examination. New Chapters is a NACES test site, allowing students to take their certification exam at the same location where they trained, providing a familiar environment with the people they practiced with.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the New Chapters Nursing Assistant Training Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be able to read, write, understand, and speak the English language
  • Hold a high school diploma, GED, or pass an ability to benefit test
  • Be physically able to perform the duties of a Nursing Assistant, including lifting, moving, and transporting patients
  • Pass a background check prior to the class start date
  • Have a negative 1-Step TB skin test within the last 12 months or provide a negative chest X-ray

Tuition & Financial Aid Information

The total tuition for the New Chapters CNA program is $850.00. This all-inclusive fee covers:

  • Textbook
  • HIV/AIDS Certification
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification

There are no additional costs for the training program itself. However, students will need to pay separate fees for:

  • Licensing fee: $85.00 to the Department of Health
  • State examination fee: $124.00 to Pearson Vue

Optional additional certifications available during the program include:

  • Mental Health/Dementia Care certification: $100.00 (normally $200.00 outside the CNA training program)
  • Nurse Delegation and Diabetes training (fee not specified)
